is defined as parts of food or non-food items that are introduced either accidentally or intentionally during or after food processing that are harmful to the consumer
Food additives
are defined as substances that the producer intentionally added to the food for a specific purpose, such as preservatives, food coloring, and artificial sweeteners. Only certain food additives are allowed and only in amounts that do not exceed safety standards
Contaminants
are defined substances found in food that the producer did not intend to be there. Contaminants may come from a number of sources, including the environment, food processing equipment, as the result of food processing, and food containers
